Does Acrylic Overlay Damage Nails

Does acrylic overlay damage nails. Many shy away from acrylics thinking that they dont have the ideal nail. Question is can I put acrylic overlay on to make nail look better and normal or not as to not further cause damage. Choose soak-off gel nails instead of acrylic nails.
Not v clear sorry. It can sometimes be better to grow out your natural nails as this will not only. The acrylic overlay is done on natural nails.
